My name is Bragi Þór Jósefsson and I am a working photographer in Reykjavík. Last year, when Covid closures hit us, I started photographing outdoor swimming pools with a drone. Taken straight down, they transform into graphical two-dimensional shapes and colors.

Further Information

An Icelandic town without a swimming pool is not considered a real town. And it's more than just a swimming pool. It's the place to go to relax or to meet family and friends - or to swim if you 're so inclined.

In early 2020,I started photographing swimming pools in the capital area with a drone from the air. The pools were empty due to Covid closures and nothing that disturbed so the shapes and colors of the pools were on full display. Subsequently I decided to photograph all the pools in the country this way. By then the pools had been reopened and people in them when the photos were taken.

I have photographed all the outdoor pools in the country, which are not privately owned, in this way. I posted pictures of the project on my website and social media where they received attention and subsequently the project was published in several media outlets.

I think a collection of these pictures in book form could work well and seek crowdfunding for printing costs. The photobook will be 120 pages and will contain one photo of every outdoor pool in the country, all 101. The photos are all taken in the same way, with a drone and straight down.
