My dream of the Mongol Derby
Mongolian Derby has been my dream for many years and my interest grew a lot after watching Aníta Aradóttir participate 2014. I watched her journey as much as possible, as I had always been interested in endurance racing on horses, but there and then I was enchanted, but still a very far away dream.
But should dreams come true you have to fight for them. I applied, sent photos and videos of my riding and lo and behold I was offered to participate in Mongol Derby 2025. But for a single mother of two working a part time job and running a farm I really needed to make arrangements for this to happen
This summer I will make this dream come true and take part in the worlds longest and toughest horse race, the Mongol Derby which is 1000 km long. You have 10 days to do the race, and participants have to cover approximately 100 km per day (but you switch horses on every 30-40 km) and then you stay in the tents of the herders. Each year there are around 1500 horses chosen for the race and their health is checked when they are picked and veterinarians watch their well being during the race.
The entry fee alone is $17.500 then there is additional cost such as plane tickets, vaccinations, insurances, necessary equipment, along with expenses due to hiring a helping hand to take care of the farm while I'm away.
So I'm looking for support and in exchange I would gladly share my experience , this competition is the biggest adventure I can dream of and with your help I can go as well prepared as possible.
I'm a country girl and a big naturelover, I grew up on a farm, Eyjardalsá in Bárðardalur and I still live there. Farming with sheep and horses, running a horse riding company, cutting hair in the nearest town (Akureyri) as a part time job along with many other things I do. I'm also a mother to two girls born 2018 and 2020 so life is busy.
Horses have always been a part of my life, in my younger years every free moment was used to ride all over the farm. Since then I have shared my passion with both children and adult, with hosting a horse riding summer camps for kids and guiding adults in trail riding trips from few hours to day trips. Most years since I became an adult I have gone sheepherding in the mountains and Icelandic wilderness and there I have got to know the Icelandic horses strength and stamina in challenging conditions.
