--- English description ---

Sonja and Fred - Travelling With Dad is a book aimed at children between the ages of 7 and 12. The story takes place during the summer holidays of the Icelandic Italian siblings Fred and Sonja. It is a “road movie” of sorts as they have great adventures on an unexpected road journey with their dad.

Sonja and Fred go to Sicily to spend the summer with their dad, granddad and grandma. The holiday does not get off to a good start as grandma and granddad suddenly have to go away to tend to an uncle who is ill and dad is offered his dream role in a film shooting in Spain. All of a sudden there is nobody to take care of Sonja and Fred. While dad tries to get friends and neighbours to step in, Sonja and Fred purchase an airplane ticket back to Iceland. The only problem is that their mum is not at home and is not answering her mobile … Dad accompanies the kids to Iceland in the belief that their mother will quickly be located. However, it turns out that she has gone camping way out east in Hallormsstaðaskógur and has left her mobile at home. Dad, Sonja and Fred set off on an uncertain journey to catch up with her because otherwise dad will miss the opportunity of a lifetime. This is not straightforward as dad’s wallet was stolen on the way to Iceland. They must therefore rely on their own wits and the kindness of others for everything to work out.

Why does this story need to be told?

In the last few years, the number of children with different nationalities and of dual/multiple nationalities has increased greatly. This group has been poorly served by the Icelandic literary world. The reality of children with two or even more nationalities is in some ways different to the reality of Icelandic children. They have to find their feet in more than one cultural world, speak more than one language, interpret for their parents and others around them and face up to prejudices in society about their nationality/nationalities. This is Sonja and Fred´s reality in the book Sonja and Fred - Travelling With Dad. On their journey they meet people that turn stereotypes and gender roles upside down. The story addresses prejudices and clichés head on in a fun and effortless way.

Why Karolina Fund?

We want to publish Sonja and Fred - Travelling With Dad both as an ebook and in print. The text has already been completed but we want to give life to the characters and the story with Lára Garðarsdóttir´s beautiful drawings. We are seeking support for the illustration and printing of the book through the clever platform we feel Karolina Fund is.

And who are “we“?

The authors of the book Sonja and Fred - Travelling With Dad are Vala Þórsdóttir and Kolbrún Anna Björnsdóttir. Illustrations are by Lára Garðarsdóttir.

Vala Þórsdóttir, writer, has in the last few years focused on children´s books with multiculturalism in the foreground. Þankaganga Myslobieg, which she did in collaboration with the illustrator Agnieszka Nowak, was awarded Fjöruverðlaunin, the women´s literary prize in 2010, received the Vorvindar (Spring Winds) recognition from IBBY (The International Board of Books for Young People) in Iceland and given a place on the IBBY International Honour´s List 2012 for the best written children´s books in the world, in addition to receiving an acknowledgement for illustration from the Ministry of Education in Poland. Vala has also written a number of plays, such as the award winning play Eldhús eftir máli, hversdagslegar hryllingssögur (Kitchen to measure, ordinary horror stories) for the National Theatre of Iceland in 2005. She has also written for television, radio and film.

Kolbrún Anna Björnsdóttir has just graduated with an M.A.-degree in applied cultural studies and is a teacher and writer. She has written teaching materials, short stories and scripts, in addition to acting, teaching and working on various culture-related projects. Recently the Icelandic National Centre for Educational Materials published the textbook Ég, þú og við öll (Me, you and all of us) by Kolbrún and Fatema Hossaini. Kolbrún has also given numerous lectures on equality education in relation to the teaching materials. The short, or micro film Leitin að kvenleikanum (The Search for Femininity) by Kolbrún and Sigríður Ásta Árnadóttir was selected as the opening film of Örvarp, the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service Micro Film Festival.Sonja and Fred - Travelling With Dad is her first novel.

Lára Garðarsdóttir graduated in 2008 with a BA Degree in Character Animation from The Animation Workshop in Denmark and has worked in illustration, animation and advertising. Because of her sincere interest in creativity and being practically always in a good mood, she soon came into the collaboration as the perfect person to illustrate the book.

What we are going to go on to do …….

Sonja and Fred - Travelling With Dad is the first of many projects. We have a lot of ideas which we intend to put into action. We are going to have the book Sonja and Fred - Travelling With Dad translated into English and Italian and sell the ebooks through Amazon. A sequel to Sonja and Fred - Travelling With Dad, the book Sonja and Fred - A Sicilian Adventure, is already in the pipeline!
We also have ideas for other book series for children incorporating equality, not only equality between men and women but equality between races, religions, the disabled and the abled, the rich and the poor. In view of our changed society and developments in the larger world we believe there is a need for strong role models for equality and freedom for children.
