2.            Flóttinn frá Líbíu, ferðalagið upp eftir Evrópu þar sem Ibrahem kynnist fjölda hælisleitenda sem þvælast um í leit að betra lífi, öryggi og friði. Á endanum ákveður hann að sækja um hæli á Íslandi – eina landinu sem hann treysti fyrir lífi sínu.

3.            Fyrstu árin á Íslandi. Hælissaga Ibrahems á Íslandi spannar mikla umbrotatíma í málaflokknum, en fyrstu útlendingalögin á Íslandi voru samþykkt árið sem hann kom til landsins, þau endurskoðuð 2009 og aftur á vormánuðum 2014. Í  bókinni verður þessi  þróun rakin. Ibrahem sjálfur fékk dvalarleyfi sitt endurnýjað til sex mánaða í senn í SJÖ ÁR! 2009 var fyrsta árið sem hann fékk dvalarleyfi til eins árs í senn. 2011 fékk hann óbundið dvalaraleyfi og í desember 2012 veitti Alþingi Ibrahem Faraj íslenskan ríkisborgararétt.

4.            Að finna jafnvægi milli tveggja heima sem fyrrum hælisleitandi og múslimi í íslensku samfélagi. Í kjölfar arabíska vorsins, þegar Gaddafi hafði verið hrakinn frá völdum og síðar drepinn, gat Ibrahem Faraj í fyrsta sinn í tíu ár heimsótt upprunaland sitt. Nú býr hann á Íslandi en reglulega heimsækir hann Líbíu, sem glímir við ýmsan vanda eftir arabíska vorið, þar sem hann hefur meðal annars miðlað til síns fólks af reynslunni af því að búa í frjálslyndu lýðræðissamfélagi.

--- English description ---

Under a fig tree  – a story of faith, hope and love

"My father, Aldanony Mousa Faraj, was born under a fig tree at the Faraj family farm at the roots of the Nafusa Mountains in Triopolitania, Libya in 1944. It was a good beginning of a life because figs are the blessed fruits of the heavens and one which the prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him) was very fond of. The day my father the happy child was born, the fig trees were in bloom and Libya at crossroads. Italian colonial time had just come to an end and my family, which had been against the colonial power and fought against it, looked with a renewed hope to the future. Thirty years later, when I was born at the doorsteps of my grandparents house in Ar-Rabhta, the mountain village where my family has lived for generations, Libya had turned into hell on Earth.“

These are the opening words of the life story of Ibrahem Faraj, who came to Iceland in 2002 and sought asylum as a political refugee, which is currently being written in Icelandic. Asylum seekers and Muslims have been in the spotlight in Iceland lately. Unfortunately the discussion has evolved onto destructive paths which are polarized and badly informed. Publishing Ibrehem Faraj story would offer an opportunity to conduct a better balanced discussion about these highly controversial issues – to the benefits of the Icelandic society as a whole. Ibrahems story is also, on its own terms, an exciting adventure about a man who never gives up and takes on whatever challenges the world throws at him and meets them with faith, hope and love.

There are four things we want to accomplish by telling Ibrahem‘s Faraj story:

1.    Tell the life-story of a man who was born and raised under Gaddafi´s dictatorship, how he was shaped by that fact and explain why he was forced to flee and leave everything he had ever known and cared for behind This is the story of an ordinary man trying his best to life well in a difficult situation – and succeeds.
2.    Shed light on the lives of asylum seekers who wander around Europe looking for a safe place to build a life. In the end Ibrahem decided to apply for asylum in Iceland – the only country he dared to trust for his life.
3.    Ibrahems story as an asylum seeker in Iceland covers important times in the history of asylum seekers in Iceland in general and that history will be traced through milestones on Ibrahems journey - from having the status of an asylum seeker, to gaining residence permit to being granted citizenship.  This process took ten years.
4.    Give insight into the project of finding balance between the two worlds Ibrahem belongs to; Libya and Iceland. With special regards to Muslims in Iceland and Europe in general and the role that people like Ibrahem play in the deconstruction and reshaping of Arab societies in the wake of the Arab spring.
