Further Information

Who is Marína Ósk?

Hi there! My name is Marína Ósk! I’m an Icelandic vocalist, composer and lyricist, born and raised in Keflavík, Iceland. I studied my BA in Jazz Performance in the Conservatory of Amsterdam (class of 2017) and my MA in Jazz performance at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm (class of 2021). I’ve already released 5 albums with various projects, amongst them my very own debut soloalbum, “Athvarf” in 2019, which received two nominations for the Icelandic Music Awards. I mostly live on the jazzy side of life, although I also identify with singer-songwriters as well as acoustic pop music. I love cats, crime novels, coffee and organising papers in folders.

OK, now that we're more acquainted....

...let’s talk about the project!

For a long time I’ve been in love with old jazz. You know, that golden swing music era where Big Bands used to play at all the parties, Ella Fitzgerald claimed her rightful throne in jazz history and Chet Baker played that oh, so cool and melodic “West Coast jazz”. That period back in the day when those warm, romantic jazz standards filled the air time on radios and people listened to vinyl records with the ever delightful cracks and pops. I'm talking about that wonderful music that ignites a feel-good sensation in your heart, embraces you and makes your head start “bopping” along with the beat.

Through this music, I found myself as a vocalist, composer and an artist.

After studying and performing this lovely music for a good percentage of my time here on earth, my songwriting muscle started to flex and new songs, in this old style of music, started pouring out of me. I ended up with an 8 song jazz album which I really want to release on both vinyl and CD, collaborating with the independent Swedish jazz label, TengTones.

And that’s why we are here…

With your support in this crowdfunding, I can finance the manufacturing of the album on vinyl and CD. With the support of my record label, TengTones, I decided to release only a 100 copies of vinyl records and a 150 CD’s, so there won’t be a lot of copies up for grabs.

What are these *Special copies*...?

Out of the 100 vinyl records that will be manufactured, 50 of them will become *Special copies*, only available through the crowdfunding.
What makes these copies special? Well, I’m going to personally wrap each one, give it a number and add something personal to the package, something directly from me to you, and only you. It'll be a surprise but I think you're gonna like it...

Why do all of this? I absolutely love vinyl records and I love things that are unique. One of my favourite things to do is to put on a record, sit down and be captivated and embraced by what the artist or artists created.
Just enjoy.

I’m also very grateful to those who support music by investing in albums and going to concerts and I wanted to do a little something extra for you much appreciated supporters. The album will of course also be released on CD for those who don’t own a record player but still want to support the art.

The music on the album...

The music on the album “One Evening in July” was mostly written by yours truly and resembles in a lot of ways that captivating old jazz music described above. The songs were born one by one and each song got to choose its own style regarding tempo, lyrics and theme. Some songs are in English, some are in Icelandic and on the album you’ll also find one cover. All the songs have it in common to be warm and rich in storytelling, decorated with a certain feeling of nostalgia;
… and might even make your head “bop” along!

Although the inspiration for all the lyric-style comes from a long-gone period in time, the lyrics do have a subtle contemporary approach to the topics at hand, like romance and matters of the heart, happiness and everything in between.

Now, let me show you the album artwork.

I teamed up with a wonderful graphic designer, Rebecca Santo, who designed this beautiful album cover and somehow she managed to capture the inner most feelings of the album;
Warm, romantic and beautiful.

The name of the album “One Evening in July” is a quote from one of the songs and refers to a moment during an Icelandic summer evening. The weather is still and relatively mild in temperature, the ever-bright evening sky provides sufficient light to read to good book while sitting on a mossy stone between snowless mountains and somewhere a bird rhythmically and gracefully wishes you a good night.

The band... "Marína Ósk Kvartett"

I really must introduce the guys that play with me on the record. The band, which was named “Marína Ósk Kvartett”, was born during my study years at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm and includes magnificent instrumentalists from Iceland and Sweden. Personally, I prefer a small, intimate setting when playing music so I decided to start a drum-less quartet with musicians who love the same kind of jazz music as I do. This resulted in a marriage between two duets where a musical couple from Iceland merged with two musical brothers from Sweden in a musical matrimony.

Now, let's get to know these marvellous musicians:

Johan Tengholm is a double bass player with heavenly skills. He’s got a strong built-in metronome and plucks the bass with much certainty and decisiveness. He knows the instrument inside out and is a master at adjusting his playing to the style and feel of each song. His tone is tight and rooted and he chooses his lines skill-fully and strategically. He comes with the highest of recommendations.

Erik Tengholm is Johan’s older brother and plays the trumpet. When I heard Erik play for the first time I couldn’t not listen intently. He plays with a melodic jazz vocabulary and he’s especially masterful at telling stories through improvisation, as well as having musical conversations within the music. The voice and the trumpet are both melody-instruments and I must say it’s an absolute treat to share that role with Erik. He also gets the highest of recommendations.

Last, but certainly not least, I’d like to introduce guitar player Mikael Máni Ásmundsson. Mikael and I got to know each other during our study years at the Conservatory of Amsterdam and we instantly connected musically. Mikael is an insightful collaborator with a perceptive ear for interplay and he has the ability to infuse music with pure beauty. To sing with him is as delightful as a gentle summer breeze and at the same time it’s exhilarating and rewarding. He’s a colourful player and able to paint the most beautiful musical pictures with his playing. A gem in the form of a person - and he comes with the highest possible amount of recommendation.

We recorded the album “live” where we just counted in and took off, recording in whole takes - much in the style of those old jazz records.

That’s my favourite type of recording jazz music as jazz truly favours the unexpected and the in-the-moment-magic that live recording offers. We recorded in the studio at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm with Marcus Sjöberg and Ívar Ragnarsson took care of mixing and mastering.

Dear Karolinafund guest...

Thank you for participating in this crowdfunding by supporting the album and/or sharing this project. By supporting the project you are simultaneously supporting new music, culture and creation -
and a young jazz artist, hoping to share her album with the world.

Lots of hugs and thank-yous,
Marína Ósk
