Why Headdresses?
For over 10 years I have been experimenting with headdresses, from hijabs to turbans, wherever I lived and traveled to. It started as research, but grew to be a part of me. Soon people around me wanted to learn more about it and on the occasion of my 30th birthday I want to fully share this knowledge with you and make some headdresses,
The scarf, the cloth, the turban, the wrap, there are many names for it as well as uses.
•It can be worn in various ways by anyone
•It can protect from sun, wind and cold
•It can hang on your wall as an artwork
•It can be turned into an emergency towel, bag or clothing
•It doesn’t have to be a spiritual wear, but it certainly can be
Headscarf wearing was my first social performance. At that time I still did not know what performances were and I have not stopped exploring head-covers and their meanings to us and our ancestors since back then.
I had a dream of making headscarves better and bringing back the positive view on them for years. Why this fundraiser now? Brain fog caused by anti-epileptic medicine discouraged me all those years, so this project is a way to also spread awareness about epilepsy.
Two years ago, the fog slowly started clearing up. I got a chance to volunteer in a digital nomad festival in the Pyrenees, where entrepreneurs from around the world seemed to believe in my idea of headdresses! Yet it took me some time to trust myself and that the world needs it. I know that I want to keep creating art and headdresses are more sustainable, relatable, profitable and versatile than my other current projects.
By supporting this project, you will help opening new doors and supporting art world around you!
The Plan has changed due to Covid-19 travel restrictions and new one will have to adapt as well
Old Plan: -I had tickets to stay in Bali from end of March to end of April.
-Attend workshops, conferences and buy fabrics from wholesale. -Make intro video before the end of the fundraiser. -Have first versions ready by May.
NEW Plan
-Making cotton headdresses in Iceland.
-Going to Bali (after the borders open) to attend mud, batik and other workshops, make headdresses, buy fabrics for new scarves
-Develop the ideas inspired by the stay in Bali and make more scarves in Iceland with traditional, spiritual and intuitive motifs.
-Focus on making conscientious headdresses of natural materials with variety of prints and embroidery that can either be made visible or hidden, depending on the needs of the wearer.
-Send out the rewards a month or two after the return (except for postcards)
-Create an online store for Skar-E-Lei
-Sell the artworks you can wear on your head - Worldwide!

The Name
Skar-E-Lei is a name I came up with after living in Italy in 2013. My first idea was seeing a headdress as a dress honoring the divine energy, as an important piece of heritage, a grounding tool for me and other women. However, anyone can wear scarves. So in the end it is a game of words:
Skar - cut - in Icelandic.
Skarelei - for the little scarf - in Lithuanian.
E Lei - and she - in Italian.
