The showcase features advanced students and professional dancers of Iceland. If you want to participate in the showcase as a solo or with your group, contact 1001 nótt via facebook.

This is the time table for the festival. Students are responsible to not book two workshops that happen at the same time. We also trust students to evaluate their own level. Workshops bought in this crowdfunding cannot be reimbursed unless they are canceled or we have to change the schedule.
If you are buying a workshop make sure to choose that workshop, not just pledge the money. We need you to do this as every workshop has limited space.

The Workshops

Cassandra Fox teaches four workshops at the festival.

Like Shimmies? Like shenanigans? If you answered yes to both those questions then you should probably come to this workshop. IMPROVING IMPROVISATION
90 minutes
Mid-level and advanced
Sunday May 31st at 3PM-4PM
This workshop covers various exercises and techniques to help build confidence and skills for improvising. Improvising can be intimidating and we can find ourselves stressing about repeating the same movements and overthinking instead of enjoying the music and sincerely reacting to it. This workshop is designed to help get past these mental blocks and work through our concerns and generate that anxious energy into energy we can utilize in our dance.

SAIDI WITH CAINE WITH RÓSALIND HANSEN
60 minutes
For people with basic knowledge of bellydance
Saturday May 30th 3PM-4PM
The cane dance, also called “raqs al assaya”, dance of the stick/cane, is a folkloric dance very popular in an Arabic Oriental dancer’s set. Usually somewhere in the middle or towards the end of a performance, a cane dance will often include audience participation. Many Oriental dancers have taken the use of the assaya in a Saidi tableau quite far, combining dance movements from the Saidi folkloric women’s dancing and skillfully manipulating an assaya in imitation of the men’s style tahtib. The Oriental dancer often uses a crooked cane or smaller sized stick than those used by the men for Tahtib.
Please bring your own cane to the workshop.

Only ten spots are available. You do your own hair and make up. We take off at 1PM on Monday June 1st from Listdansskólinn (where we had the workshops) and we assume to be back in town at 7PM.
Don't forget:
- Pack snacks!
- Costumes
- A good coat and blanket
- Make up and hair products

The Team

Bellydancers Kristína R. Berman and Margrét Erla Maack are the producers of the festival. Both of them have been active in the Icelandic bellydance scene for almost 20 years, as dancers and teachers. Two managers will join the team in the heat of the festival, bellydancers Sigga Nanna Gunnarsdóttir and Jóhanna Jónas.

1001 nótt translates to 1001 night - the Icelandic title of Arabian Nights - started out as a yearly bellydance showcase where Iceland's bellydancers gathered for one night to show their best moves and choreographies. In 2020 we are celebrating 1001 nótt for the fourth time and we decided to add to the show and make a two day festival with workshops. Our mission is to do a festival every other year.
