Further Information

A video in Icelandic about the project - nice pictures

What is worth knowing about the exhibition On the Sagatrail of Thordur kakali?

The exhibition On the Sagatrail of Thordur kakali will be located on the farm Kringlumyri, in the region of Skagafjordur, in Northern Iceland. The association Kakalaskali is behind the exhibition, and is owned by Sigurdur Hansen and Maria Gudmundsdottir, farmers at Kringlumyri.

An audio guide will lead the guests through the exhibition area which is both a history and an art exhibition, where the story of one of the most influential individual of the 13th century, Thordur kakali, is told. Thordur is followed from the time that he steps ashore at Gasir in Eyjafjordur in Northern Iceland in 1242 until he dies in Norway in 1256. The aim is to make the history of 13th century both symbolic and visual and awake the interest of both natives and foreign visitors about this period in the history of the nation which has been called the Age of Sturlungar, and the bloody strife that lead to the nation falling under Norwegian rule.

A group of international artists have been hired to design and create pieces of art for the exhibition area (see picture below) and they will interpret with their own methods and materials characters and events of the story. Besides there will be short explanations, texts, genealogical trees and maps where needed. We advertised for artists and received 90 applications from all around the world from which 14 artists were selected to participate in the project, see their names and websites at the bottom of the page.

A workshop for the artists will be held at Kringlumyri from the 25th of March until the 15th of April. Jon Adolf Steinolfsson, sculptor, is the artistic director of the exhibition and will also be working on his own pieces during the workshop. The whole process will be filmed and guests are invited to come and see what the artists are making during all the three Saturdays that they are working at Kringlumyri.

The exhibition will open in it's final form in the summer of 2019.

Who are behind the project?

Behind the project are we Sigurdur Hansen and Maria Gudmundsdottir the owners of Kakalaskali, our family, and the artists Jon Adolf Steinolfsson and Karin Esther Gorter. The reason we started this project is a passion for the story of Thordur kakali and the Age of Sturlungar as well as keen interest for arts. Our project combines the two. The project has been ongoing for some years and now the biggest milestones are coming: the audio guide and the making of the art work. It would be truly amazing to get your support so that we can finish the project!

Why an exhibition about Thordur kakali?

For decades there has been an immense interest in the Age of Sturlungar in the region of Skagafjordur in Northern Iceland. It is sufficient to name the association On the Trail of Sturlungar which has created many associated events and put up signs at historical sites, and then there is a virtual reality exhibition in the making in the nearby town of Saudarkrokur. The exhibition is called 1238 - The Battle of Iceland and focuses on one of the big battles fought in the region in the period. The Skagafjordur area is claiming it's place as a center for historical tourism associated with the Age of Sturlungar, as many of the big events of this period took place in the region and many of the most powerful people at that time resided there for longer or shorter time. Another big battle, The Battle of Haugsnes was fought in 1246 just a few hundred meters from where the exhibition about Thordur kakali will be. During the earlier battle of Orlygsstadir Thordur kakali was away, at the court of the Norwegian king, when his father and brothers along with many of his kin were killed, but in the later Battle of Haugsnes, Thordur had returned to Iceland gathered an army and came out victorious against a much bigger army (see below : the video is in Icelandic with English subtitles, a version with German subtitles is also available online).

The Stone Army - The Battle of Haugsnes

Sigurdur Hansen has created an extensive outdoor installation in memory of The Battle of Haugsnes, at the same spot where it most likely took place. The Stone Army as the piece is usually called is close to the farm Kringlumyri. You can take a look at the YouTube video that follows, it is in Icelandic with English subtitles, a version with German subtitles is also available online. The exhibition On the Sagatrail of Thordur kakali follows this artwork.

What makes Thordur kakali so special?

Sigurdur Hansen thinks, like many others, that Thordur was the greatest politician and strategists of his times. To learn more about Thordur kakali you could for example consult The Saga of Sturlungar.

Where is the project at?

Sigurdur and Maria the farmers in Kringlumyri have turned an old building at the farm into a banquet/conferance hall and receive guests and host events that focus on history, literature and the Icelandic language in collaboration with other institutions, such as the regional archive museum, the regional library and the Árni Magnússon institute for Icelandic studies to name a few. The history and art exhibition will be in a different part of the same building. What we have done so far has been financed with grants from local and national funds, and with the immense voluntary work of family and friends.

The exhibition area itself is not completely finished and will evolve along with the creation of the artwork that is to fill it. Sigurður Hansen has built stone walls within the exhibition area to frame the saga trail with 30 spaces for artwork. The text for the audio guide has been written in Icelandic, English, German and Norwegian, and for children in Icelandic. Fourteen artist have been hired to create the artwork for the exhibition as we said before, and the workshop will be ongoing for three weeks from the 25th of March until the 15th of April.

The project is in full swing, and we ask for your support to fund it and have a part in making this cultural heritage a reality.
