Skurk is a band from Akureyri, in the north of Iceland. The band was formed late last century (about 1987-ish) by young guys wanting to play rock 'n' roll. At first the band was in some sort of rock/punk style, but without having any special genre in mind. They just wanted to play, even though the line-up kept changing. In 1990 Skurk started to focus on thrash metal and the line-up is mostly set, except for bass players, who were either working on sea, playing in other bands too, or simply didn't have the muscle strength to compete with the guitarists. Skurk played a lot live and wrote countless songs, but since recording in a studio was very expensive the band couldn't afford studio time. Finally Skurk bought their own 8 track studio and started recording, with big ideas regarding world fame.

Around 20-30 songs were recorded - both old and new, plus all the cover songs the band had played over the years, but when it came to actually releasing the material the band had no resources or money so Skurk decided to quit and leave the scene soon after. Before saying farewell Skurk gathered their favorite bands from Akureyri and Reykjavik and threw a massive concert and even bigger party afterwards.
The now former Skurk-members kept together in various musical acts until the last years of the century when their paths separated. Some kept working on music.
In the year 2011 the rock goddesses pulled a few strings, and three Skurk members got together again. They met up for the same reasons as when Skurk was formed in the beginning - playing rock 'n' roll. And soon the old dream resurfaced. Before long Skurk booked a gig with Skálmöld, and played some more gigs after that. Soon they headed into the studio to record an EP. Final Gift was released in June 2014, and included five favorite songs from the last century plus one new track. Final Gift got good reviews, but having more historical value than artistic value, the members decided to write a full length, full scale heavy metal album. The mission was simple: to make the best heavy metal album released in Iceland!
This project is bombastic and massive and has been growing day by day. Originally idea of a simple heavy metal CD written for a five piece band is now a voluminous task for up to thirty musicians recorded in two studios. Skurk members wrote this album immediately after releasing their début EP Final Gift. They had enough ditties to work with and in three months they where ready for recordings. Soon it was clear that some songs where more flamboyant or "bigger" than others and Skurk decided to "take it all the way" and record live orchestra.
To make that experience more rewarding Skurk wanted to work with younger generation, and contacted Akureyri School of Music vice principal Haukur Pálmason for collaboration and hired Daníel Þorsteinsson to write and orchestrate the classical score for four songs. The main theme and goal is to widen the musical horizon for all and make good music, but also to have classical instrumentation approach to Skurks songs.
This project is well on its way and only one song left recording in the music school. Also to add to the flavor few chosen friends will come in and put some personal touch to Skurks first EP.
The final recordings are scheduled in February.
