Velkomin á Karolina Fund síðuna mína. Verkefnið sem ég er að safna framlögum til er vegna bókarinnar LJÓSBERI. En fyrst smá tala um mig: Ég er 50 ára gaur úr Vesturbænum þar sem ég bý ásamt Heddý minni og drengjunum okkar tveimur. Ég hef starfað sem grafískur hönnuður, myndskreytir og rithöfundur en ég er höfundur Benedikts búálfs og félaga í Álfheimum.

Fyrsta bókin var gefin út 1999 og eru þær orðnar níu talsins. Ég leyfi mér að vera pínu montinn yfir velgengni ævintýranna og söngleiksins sem var gerður eftir fyrstu bókinni. Ég segi ennþá frá ævintýrum Benedikts en undanfarin ár hef ég einnig unnið að sögum fyrir eldri lesendur.

LJÓSBERI er ein þeirra. Hún fjallar, í mjög stuttu máli, um fjögur frækin ungmenni sem rannsaka dularfullan dauða lærimeistara síns. Þeim er öllum gefin gáfa skygninnar en eru misjaflega langt á veg komin í þeirri gáfu. Í rannsókn sinni berjast þau m. a. við möru, eiga við óvæginn tilbura og bjarga saklausu fólki frá átroðningiillra vætta sem minna helst á skrímslin úr þjóðsögunum. Þau komast brátt að því að allt sem þeim var kennt um lífið, alheiminn og tilveru sköpunarinnar er ekki eins og þau héldu eða gátu órað fyrir.

LJÓSBERI er fyrsta bókin í þríleik sem heitir Síðasti seiðskrattinn. Sögusvið hennar er vesturbær Reykjavíkur. Skygnigáfa ungmennanna er þeim bæði til blessunar og bölvunar. Vilji þeirra til að sættast við krafta sína og hæfni til að nota þá mun skipta sköpum í viðureign þeirra við illa vætti og aðrar skeppnur sem við höfum tilhneigingu til að kalla guði. LJÓSBERI er frumlegur og mystískur spennutryllir fyrir ungt fólk á öllum aldri.

Ég er að safna framlögum svo ég geti klárað bókina. Ég er langt á veg kominn með sjálf skrifin. Það er búið að plotta söguna. Persónur eru fullskapaðar og heimur þeirra líka. Sagan er epísk og ég þarf tíma til að gera henni góð skil ... og tími kostar peninga. Þess vegna er ég hér á Karolina Fund. Ég bið um ykkar aðstoð og býð ykkur um leið í smá ævintýri.

Hi. My name is Ólafur but i'm called Óli

And welcome to my Karolina Fund page. I'm here to get some funding for my latest book, Ljósberi (Lightbringer) But before we get down to business, I need to tell you a few things about myself.

I'm a 50 year old, happily married, father of two teenage boys and live in the West End of Reykjavík, where I grew up. I have been a rabid fan of comic books ever since my mom bought me an issue of IRON MAN (#15, 1969. He fought against the Crimson Dynamo!). It was love at first sight. I soon began to draw and design my own characters with every intention of becoming a comic book artist when I grew up. Later on in life I eventually became an illustrator and graphic designer. My CV covers basically every aspect of the field. Being a graphic designer is fun and pays the bills ... mostly ... in a stable economy. But the little kid who wanted to create fantastic characters and creatures ... well, he got left out. I soon found that something was missing. I wasn't happy at work, became restless, could not sleep ... basic reality disfunction. Then I got an idea. It began as a small thought, prickling in the back of my head ... and then exploded into the very popular Benedikt the Elf.

In 1998 I quit my steady job as head designer at DV and went head on into the lunatic world of freelancing. I wrote and illustrated the adventures of Benedikt and friends for eight years, from 1999-2007. The books became very popular and I found out I could write ... well, at least tell a good story. After the first book came out I was asked to write a childrensplay/musical from that book for the theatre. The play, Benedikt búálfur, was produced in 2003 and ran through the winter of 2003-04. It became an instant hit ... and still is with children today. I've had a terrific time with Benedikt and friends and I still write his stories, the latest, Runni risi, published in 2012.

But that little kid who wanted to become a comic book artist wanted more. So I decided to try my hand at longer and more complicated books for an older audience.

... and now, onto the business at hand ...

For the last seven years I have been working on several ideas for more mature readers, or the young-adult market.

Ljósberi (Lightbringer) is one of those ideas.

The story follows a group of gifted teenagers who are investigating the suspicious death of their old mentor. In the process they discover that life, the Universe and everything they know to be true ... is not as it seems.

Without divulging to much of the plot, here are some elements and info from the book: 1. It's the first of three in an series called Síðasti seiðskrattinn (The Last Warlock). 2. It takes place mostly in the West End of Reykjavík. 3. The main characters are born with a gift that is more of a burden than a blessing. How they cope with these gifts will be the difference between life and death for some. 4. In the book we encounter a secret society bent on reviving the horrors of ages past; mythical beings known as vættir, both good and evil ... mainly evil. You know how it is. 5. It's also a murder mystery.

The story is there. The characters are there and the world they live in. Every element is in place. It's a big story and I need time to finish this first installment. Alas, time costs money. Therefore I am here at Karolina Fund and I need your help.
