Ástvaldur Zenki Traustason

Welcome to my Karolina Fund profile. Here is a little bit about myself, who I am and what I'm doing (roughly).

I'm a pianist located in Reykjavik, Iceland. I play in all kinds of musical projects: pop, jazz, tango—you name it. My work ranges from simple gigs around the Reykjavík area to more serious ones in bigger venues. Although I play different styles of music, my passion is jazz. That's where my heart beats. I also play the accordion.

15 years ago I founded a new Music School, Tónheimar, where people (from 6–95 years) are taught to play the piano, mostly by ear. The school has become a big part of my life and I must admit that in addition to my passion for music, I'm an ardent teacher.

As well as running Tónheimar, I work as a director of the newly established Rhythmic Department in Tónlistarskóli Kópavogs (The Kópavogur Music School).

Another passion of mine (I'm a very passionate person) is Zen Buddhism and practice. That's where my middle name Zenki comes from. For 20 years I've practiced Zen Meditation under the guidance of Jakusho Kwong -roshi and received a priest transmission in a Hoshi Ceremony (Dharma Holder) from him, becoming an assistant teacher. I'm currently working as a priest in Nátthagi (Night pasture) Zen in Iceland, located here in Reykjavik.

My music is deeply inspired by my Zen practice and it's my hope that my music inspires other people to live their lives to their fullest potential. My deepest hope is to help all sentient beings, I know it's a big thing but at the same time it's simple. Just meeting every moment with equanimity and ask your self what can I do to help now. I's not always easy but to aspire in that direction is what matters.
