Inga Freyrsdottir Lorenzo

She studied Fine Arts at the University of the Basque Country during the academic year of 2012 – 13. After this period, she decided to focus on her musical career and was accepted to study for a bachelor degree with the transversal flute in Musikene (Conservatorium of the Basque Country). She was soon invited to perform as a soloist with several orchestras, and to collaborate as an orchestral musician, for example with the Basque Symphony Orchestra, the Bilbao Symphony Orchestra, Pori Sinfonietta and the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra, among others.

Inga finished her bachelor degree studies with the highest qualifications and started a Postgraduate degree at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, graduating with honors, and later, she became a Master in Music in Koninkljik Conservatorium of Antwerpen.

In 2021, she was accepted as a student on the Nordic Master's degree in Folk Music at the Danish National Academy of Music. As part of that programme, she travelled through the Nordic countries for two years, staying for several months in Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland, learning from the current bearers of each country’s traditions and obtaining highly valuable information and input from institutions such as the Royal Conservatory of Stockholm, Sibelius Academy (Helsinki) and Ole Bull Akademiet (Voss). This experience led her to focus her research project on Icelandic traditional music, leading to her final project called “An Icelandic translation for flute”, which bonds her own artistry and creativity with the traditional music material that she collected during her field research in Iceland.

Inga has been actively performing with folk music ensembles such as the Greek/Spanish band Belgriego (Belgium), the Estonian/Swedish band FRÄNDER and the Basque/fusion band KUTTUNE, among others, performing internationally in Europe, Asia and America.

Apart from her activity as a performer, she has recently published several articles in the Dykinson editorial and she has participated in various conferences about folk music, music education and the psychology of music.

In 2023 Inga started working with Atli Freyr Hjaltason on the Danslög Jónasar Icelandic dance music project, for which she has transcribed all fifty tunes in the 1864, handwritten notebook of Jónas Helgason.
