Why make a cartoon about endangered animals with superpowers? Because right now, there are thousands of species of animals facing extinction in our world (and superpowers are cool). 

The animals are facing extinction for various reasons. Some are doing so for natural reasons, but too many are doing so because of how humans have invanded their natural habitat with no regard to what was there before. Some areas have been changed so much that it is impossible for animals to survive there anymore. This is not limited to just one continent, this is a global problem. The animals range from the mighty Siberian tiger down to the small cone snail. 

Enter the Flopalongs!

The Flopalongs are a group of animals that was once held captive on Gerg’s island. Gerg is the villainous industrialist that care neither for humans or animals. All he cares about is squeezing the last drop of oil, or mineral or whatever it is he’s exploiting at any one of his operational locations.

After a daring escape, Igbot the dragon is exposed to a meteorite that gives him superpowers. He returns to share his superpowers with the other Flopalongs and together they escape into the night, with a mission to bring an end to Gerg’s evil operation. 

We believe that The Flopalongs will be a success with today's kids. The animals are kind-hearted and the message is that we should all do our best to live in harmony, without  the preaching tone. The cartoons will not just be a passive activity where the kids are spoon-fed pretty images, but educational and also encourage kids to find out more about the animals after the show has finished. With the amount of information available to us, literally at our fingertips, the Flopalongs will be a fascinating gateway into an exciting world of education and entertainment (sometimes referred to as “Edutainment”).
 

Greene Toys LLC has teamed up with Þröstur Bragason, a 3-D artist in Iceland to make a short film to introduce The Flopalongs to the world.

John Robert Greene originally created the Flopalongs. His résumé includes creating shows for Merv Griffin, working for the Coca Cola Company, Procter and Gamble and Revlon.

Þröstur Bragason is the project lead in Iceland. Like most people his age, he grew up watching Star Wars, He-Man and The Transformers. This had an impact on Throstur's decision to become a computer animator. Throstur is concerned about what effect the melting of the polar caps will have on the global environment and does not see it as a business opportunity but a warning sign. His professional résumé includes working at Lazytown, CCP Games (EVE Online), commercials and informational video projects. If you look closely, you can also see him running around the beaches of Iwo Jima in Clint Eastwoods' "Flags of our fathers". Throstur is an avid bicyclist, having competed in amateur cyclo-cross races and using every opportunity to hit the dirt tracks that are in the hills next to the Reykjavik office. He hardly ever misses the opportunity to ride his bike to work instead of using the family car.

The next step after production of the short film is complete is to show the film to investors in the hopes of getting funding for the production of a whole series of shows for TV.

Each episode will focus on a specific animal and the danger it is facing in its natural habitat, while still keeping the big picture in perspective.

The shows will be produced in Iceland.  A portion of the profits of the production/sale of show will be given to preservation societies such as the World Wildlife Fund.

Til hvers að gera teiknimynd um dýr sem eru ofurhetjur og í útrýmingarhættu? Vegna þess að núna eru þúsundir dýrategunda í útrýmingarhættu og ofurhetjur eru svalar. 

Dýr lenda í útrýmingarhættu af ýmsum ástæðum. Stundum er það eðlilegt að dýrategund deyji út, hún hættir að aðlaga sig umhverfi eða önnur dýrategund yfirtekur svæðið sem hin lifði á. Alltof oft er það þó af mannavöldum. Mannskepnan hefur mikil áhrif á umhverfið og dýrin sem búa þar. Þetta er ekki takmarkað við ákveðin landssvæði eða heimsálfur. Þetta er vandamál um allan hnöttinn. Þetta eru eins ólíkar tegundir og Síberíutígurinn og Keilusnigillinn. 

Þá kynnum við Flopalongs til sögunnar! 

Flopalongs eru hópur dýra sem var einu sinni í einkadýragarði á eyju í eigu illmennisins Gerg. Gerg er vondur og gráðugur maður sem vill ekki sjá neitt óspillt og sækist eftir því að sölsa undir sig allar náttúruaðlindir sem hann getur. Hann skilur eftir sig sviðna jörð hvert sem hann fer. 

Það er svo Komododreki að nafni Igbot sem sleppur fyrstur úr prísundunni og kemst í tæri við dularfullan loftstein. Snerting við loftsteininn gefur honum ofurkrafta sem hann deilir svo með hinum Flopalongunum þegar hann snýr aftur til að hjálpa þeim að sleppa líka. 

Flopalongs dýrin eiga fullt erindi við börn í dag. Þau eru góðhjörtuð og kenna að það sé hægt að lifa í sátt og samlyndi við menn og dýr, án þess þó að vera með predikun. Teiknimyndirnar verða ekki eingöngu mötun, heldur verða börnin frædd um dýrin á meðan á þáttunum stendur, og þau hvött til að kynna sér meira um dýrin eftir þættina. Kennsla í gegnum afþreyingu (eða "edutainment") er vinsæl þessa dagana og getur virkað hvetjandi á börn að læra t.d. um dýrategundir í útrýmingarhættu og þá líka hvað hægt er að gera til að hjálpa þeim.  

Greene Toys LLC og Þröstur Bragason hafa sameinað krafta sína í þeim tilgangi að búa til stuttmynd sem segir þessa sögu Flopalongs dýranna. 

John Robert Greene skapaði Flopalongs upphaflega. Hann hefur komið að sjónvarpsþáttagerð fyrir Merv Griffin. Hann hefur líka gegnt ýmsum störfum fyrir Coca Cola Company, Procter and Gamble og Revlon. 

Þröstur Bragason er forstöðumaður verkefnisins á Íslandi. Hann ólst upp við að horfa á Star Wars, He-Man og Transformers og er það líklega mikill örlagavaldur og faktor í því afhverju hann valdi sér teiknimyndagerð sem framtíðarstarf. Þresti er annt um umhverfið og hann sér t.d. ekki bráðnun íshellnanna sem sérstakt viðskiptatækifæri heldur frekar sem viðvörunarljós. Hann hefur unnið hjá Latabæ, CCP og hefur komið að mörgum mismunandi auglýsinga- og upplýsingaverkefnum, s.s. áramótaauglýsingu Icelandair og DAIM. Ef vel er að gáð sést hann líka hlaupa um á ströndum Iwo Jima í myndinni Flags of our Fathers. Þröstur stundar fjallahjólreiðar af miklu kappi og hefur m.a. keppt í cyclocross áhugamanna keppnum. 

Þegar búið er að framleiða stuttmyndina eru næstu skref þau að kynna hana fyrir fjárfestum með það að markmiði að tryggja fjármögnun á gerð sjónvarpsþátta um Flopalongs dýrin. Þættirnir verða framleiddir á Íslandi og mun hluti af tekjum tengdar þeim renna til náttúru- og dýraverndunarsamtaka.
