Great play, strong group, ingenious director! Kristin Johannesdottir‘s concept for the staging of Beckett‘s ever-young masterpiece is brilliant, but the right set-design is fundamental! The set is not over-expensive, though it is costlier than we can afford. Help us let the work shine brighter!

Further Information

Further on the project:

The theatre group, Svipir has embarked on the staging of Endgame, the sixty year old masterpiece of the irish Nobel prize winner, and one of his most famous works. Kristin Johannesdottir directs the group with the aid of the dramatist, Sigurður Palsson. Maong the actors are Þorsteinn Bachmann, Thor Tulinius and Harpa Arnardottir. Thorunn Maria Jonsdottir is the costume designer, but Kristin J. conceived the set-design. Lighting is in the hands of Halldor Orn Oskarsson. The premiere is planned on the first of May in Reykjavik‘s Tjarnarbio.

We want to give the play as much credit as we possibly can in performance and have, thus, been rehearsing since early last fall, the actors meeting regularly to read an reread the text and let it seep in, the director giving them juicy stuff to feed on, laying ground for an inspiring and clever performance and developing the right surroundings for the play with the costume-designer. The work has been fun and all is racing towards a good goal. There is only one splinter in our hoof: we are lacking the means to build the set that is called for. The designers have spun out of thin air such a brilliant setting (in accordance with the authors’ directions, of course!) that we are certain that Beckett himself will rise from his sleep to give it a glance. But it costs a wee bit to bring it to life. It would be a terrible shame, to have stumbled upon, what seems to us to be the most perfect set-design, and then, not be able to see it flourish because of a slight lack of money, and be, instead, forced to live with a bitter semi-solution. This is why we turn to you, dear supporters and patrons of the arts, that you might spare a „dime“, so we can lead the project to its rightful crescendo.

The story behind the project:

About sixty years ago, Beckett sat down and started working on Endgame, after having had a tremendous success with his first play, Waiting for Godot, premiered in Paris in 1953. Endgame bears with it, that it was created under the threat of an atomic war and describes a world where life is coming to an end after a great disaster. In 1955 mankind lived in constant fear of nuclear destruction, but today, in 2015, we live in fear of environmental destruction.

Our project started in spring 2013, when a few actors decided to seek for a grant from the Icelandic Ministry of Culture, to produce Endgame. The reasons: The text is sublime, the subject material daunting and inspiring, both funny and horrifying, obvious and obscure, depressing and enlightening. It is ever-young and just as poignant today as it was sixty years ago. The author is an enigma.

In January 2014, we received a letter from the Ministry declaring that we had 50% of the funds to produce the play. We started right away, but soon there were some changes in the group, because certain participants had to jump of the wagon because of other projects, but the final group was gathered in the September 2014.

The group:

Director: Kristín Jóhannesdóttir
Translation: Árni Ibsen
Dramaturg: Sigurður Pálsson
Set-design: Kristín Jóhannesdóttir
Costumes: Þórunn María Jónsdóttir
Lighting design: Halldór Örn Óskarsson
Mask: Kristín Thors
Photographer: Jónatan Grétarsson
Film work: Hákon Már Oddsson
Stage manager and more: Arnþór Þórsteinsson
Assistant producer: Vigfús Þormar Gunnarsson
Producer: Þór Tulinius

Actors:
Þorsteinn Bachmann
Þór Tulinius
Harpa Arnardóttir and others ...

In spring 2014 we were welcomed with the performance in Tjarnarbíó, which is the most active and celebrated Fringe theatre venue in Iceland. As stated earlier the group has met regularly since September.

The producers work hard on procuring more funds for the project so we can pay the participants sufficient wages (Normal union wages will not be possible, but hopefully they won‘t be shamefully low either.) In the world of finances, the battle for pennies put in to the arts and culture is hard, but we shall persevere.

Rehearsals will begin full-time in the middle of March. We have begun to gather parts of costumes and props, that do not cost much and it is going well. There is though a certain element necessary for the set that demands purchasing at a price ranging 700.000 Icelandic crowns or 5000 Euros. It is tempting to try to describe the set for you, but we have decided to leave it be, so that the magic of it will bloom when it is revealed on stage. We believe this costly element to be a key-factor to the accomplishment of a perfect performance. Therefore we decided in the beginning of February to seek funding through Karolina fund.
