What's going on at a farm just off the aluminum smelting plant at Grundartangi? The horses have become ill since the year 2007 and 12 horses have been put to sleep. Authorities prefer to ignore the situation and will not admit to the possibility of fluorine poisoning.

Further Information

--- English description below ---

Trailer with English subtitles:

The farmer, Ragga Þorgrímsdóttir is my cousin. Our mothers were sisters. Ragga grew up on Kúludalsá, a large farm, where mixed farming was practiced. Our grandparents lived there as well. There she was born and our grandmother who was a nurse, helped her mother with the birth. Ragga loves horses and they have always been a large part of her life.

When I was given the task at the film school to make a documentary, I had already decided what I was going to do. I wanted to tell the story of the horses at Kúludalsá and the farmer, my cousin. Tell of their struggle with catastrophic illness and the farmer‘s struggle with the authorities. Why were they so reluctant to admit that fluorine poisoning would be the case when everything pointed to it? They did not listen to Ragga‘s appeal. Hvalfjördur (The Fjord of Whales, where the farm is located) was meant to become a thriving fjord where production of organic food was to be its speciality. Today, it has unfortunately become too contaminated because of the aluminum factory. ?I got two technicians from school to my support, Arni and Haukur. They immediately showed keen interest and agreed that the documentary should become more than a school‘s project. It should catch the attention of the public. The public should be entitled to hear what has been happening in recent years. Why should animals and nature have to give way to contaminated factories? Great interests are at stake and outsiders would have to come up with suggestions for improvements, which perhaps meant better cleaning equipment, because we can’t claim that the factory along with other polluting factories would be closed down. The solution is maybe not found in this documentary, but it is to make everyone to think and face the awful fact. Is this to any worth for the community and the future? Is this a world we want to leave behind us? Man must learn to live in harmony with nature and show it respect.
