Further Information

--- Icelandic description below ---

We are two Icelandic health care professionals - Dr. Gyða Eyjólfsdóttir is a Psychologist and Berglind Ósk Birgisdóttir is a Registered Nurse. We have a passion for every aspect of infertility, including how to increase the well-being of people who are dealing with infertility and how to increase the chances of pregnancy for those who undergo IVF treatments. In her private practice, Gyða sees approximately 20% of the people who undergo IVF treatments in Iceland. Berglind is a board member of Tilvera – the Icelandic Infertility Association and the Icelandic Endometriosis Association. In recent years, we have collected extensive information and specialized knowledge of the psychological, social and biological aspects of infertility.

Infertility is diagnosed when a couple has been having unprotected intercourse for a year or longer without the woman becoming pregnant. After the age of 35, infertility is diagnosed after unprotected intercourse for six months. 1 out of every 6 couples meet the criteria for this definition and need assistance with creating a baby. Commonly, people need several attempts at ART (Assisted Reproduction Technology) treatments (artificial insemination techniques and IVF treatments) before the woman becomes pregnant.

The long time it can take to create a child can be very difficult for these individuals and it is very common for women to meet the diagnostic criteria for anxiety and depression while they are struggling with infertility. Women’s emotional well-being is usually worse than men’s in this process, except when the cause is male infertility.  Compared to other patient groups, people with infertility rate their emotional well-being similar to cancer patients and people who are HIV positive.  However, those who suffer from infertility typically complain about lack of social support as few people typically understand how difficult it is to deal with infertility and the effect it has on self-esteem, communication with others, finances, plans for the future and emotional well-being.

Every year, about 2.000.000 English-speaking women/couples undergo IVF treatments. This group of individuals needs support and information but half of these couples say that infertility is the hardest thing they have ever had to deal with in their lives. Each year, a portion of these women/couples will stop having IVF treatments because of the emotional distress that accompanies the treatments. With the app we hope to make the treatment process easier and to improve IVF success rates. The IVF treatments are very expensive and most people cannot afford to have many treatments. That is why it is very important that couples having IVF treatments are well prepared to maximize their chances to become pregnant as well as decrease stress and depression.

This group of people has a great need for information on infertility and IVF. Every day the words infertility and IVF are entered between 2500-2800 times in the Google Chrome search engine. Few people who are having IVF treatments have access to all the information that will become available in the App or it will take them years to gather the information themselves. During those years, their emotional well-being deteriorates and people find it harder and harder emotionally to have yet another treatment.

Among the things you can expect to see in the app is:  how you can increase your chances of becoming pregnant from 30-35% per IVF treatment cycle to 67% by taking a particular vitamin (based on the results of a study).  Get ideas on what to discuss with your doctor prior to your IVF cycle or after a failed attempt.  Get information on how you can cope better with your treatment cycle.  You will be able to listen to relaxation exercises specifically designed to help you through the IVF process and will find information on the results of different studies which have found what improves your chances of becoming pregnant.  During your treatment cycle the app will provide you with a daily tip that provides information on what you can do to maximize your chances to become pregnant and minimize the stress associated with the IVF treatment cycle, all based on the results of studies.

Never before has there been such a wealth of scientifically proven information available to people who go through the IVF process. We are overjoyed and so very excited about this app. We would greatly appreciate it if you would help us fund this important project.

Iphone users please note the app will only be available for the Android market this time around. We hope to have the app for the iphone market available in 2015. We hope you will still pledge to support this project even if the reward for a pledge will not apply to the iphone version.

Estimated delivery time for rewards:
All rewards will be sent before 1st of October.

Til þess að styrkja verkefnið smellir þú einfaldlega á ,,Pledge to project“ hnappinn hér hægra megin á síðunni.

Áætlaður afhendingartími fyrir umbun:
Allar umbunir verða sendar fyrir 1. oktober 2014.
