When the Apotheker arrives in a small fishing village on the southwest corner of Iceland, mysterious events start to unveil in the area. The sea, once abundant, seizes to feed and nourish the towns people and unexplained disappearances and deaths of young men start to occur. The Apotheker seems to have arrived with death on his heels.
The Apotheker is written by the Icelandic artist Smári Guðmundsson. Smári has participated in many music-related projects over the years (Klassart, Fríða Dís, Mystery Boy, Lifun, Tommygun Preachers) but is currently working on material that will come out under his name. The project is called The Apotheker and is being produced both as a concept album and radio play.
Smári Guðmundsson previously wrote and produced the musical Mystery Boy, which tackles the topic of love and eternity but in the Apotheker, death is the main subject of scrutiny.
Many people are involved in the project in one way or another. The script is written in Berlin in collaboration with the Greek Chris Kyriazidi who helped complete the story that Smári started writing in the basement of the Samkomuhúsið in Sandgerði. The music is partly narrated by Brian Stivale who lives in Los Angeles and works as a voice actor, e.g. for Marvel and Disney, Björgvin Guðjónsson, who works as a graphic designer, is in charge of the visual part of the project from Denmark, where Sigurdór Guðmundsson also mastered the album.
In the recording process, which lasted about four years, there has been a great and good collaboration with Smári and Stefán Örn Gunnlaugsson. Stefán Örn produced and supervised all aspects of the creation of the music for the Apotheker and also played on keyboards and synthesizers, he also proved to be Smári's guide for sound and sobriety in general. Other excellent instrumentalists on the album are: Fríða Dís Guðmundsdóttir, vocals, Viktor Atli Gunnarsson, guitar, and Þorvaldur Halldórsson on drums, while Smári also played guitar and bass himself.
The Apotheker is scheduled for release on June 1. 2021
