Further Information

Barokkbandið Brák was founded in 2014 by Icelandic violinists Elfa Rún Kristinsdóttir, Guðbjörg Hlín Guðmundsdóttir and Laufey Jensdóttir. The ensemble mainly consists of young musicians who all share a passion for historically informed performance of Renaissance and Baroque music and seek to bring the music from this period to a wide audience in Iceland.

Since its founding the group has held numerous concerts in Reykjavík and Skálholt with great success. Many of Brák’s performances have been recorded and broadcast by the Icelandic National Radio and a few recordings are now available online. Barokkbandið Brák frequently collaborates with renowned singers and instrumentalists from all over Europe giving each individual project its own unique sound.

What is our project about?

We are recording our first album this Spring, which will be a double CD, named Tvær hliðar / Two Sides. The album will be released at the end of this year, and will represent the profile of our ensemble, Brák.

With our album Tvær hliðar / Two Sides we will be presenting the two contrasting sides of our music-making. We are recording Baroque music together with new music written especially for the ensemble. All of the pieces share the same sound world as everything will be recorded on historical instruments from the baroque era.

Tvær hliðar / Two Sides will feature famous Baroque pieces that we have performed in the past years, including by composers like Vivaldi and Corelli, as well as newly rediscovered pieces that have never been recorded before!

The CD with the contemporary pieces will include 3 new works that we are premiering in March 2021, by composers Kristinn Smári Kristinsson, Bergrún Snæbjörnsdóttir and Þráinn Hjálmarsson, as well as pieces we have commissioned in the past years form other young Icelandic composers.

What are our goals, who is our audience?

Our main goal is to reach out to a wide audience. Two Sides will reach the ears of people who love classical music and the early music scene, as well as people who are interested in getting to know early music performance practice on period instruments. We also aim to reach the ears of people who are interested in contemporary music, Icelandic composers, and new works written for period orchestras and ensembles.

Our aim with Barokkbandið Brák is to encourage the small but growing early music scene in Iceland, to give young instrumentalists an opportunity to play on historical instruments and to widen the repertoire of contemporary music written for period ensembles.

Why should you support our project and what happens with your money?

By supporting our project you will support the Icelandic music scene in several ways; you will help us to develop early music in Iceland, give Icelandic musicians an opportunity to perform on historical instruments and you’ll support Icelandic composers and their understanding of composing for historical instruments.

It is extremely expensive to record an album, and apart from the actual recording costs we will use the money to pay our musicians a fee, we will pay for the rehearsal space and the recording venue. Another part of the money will go into the visual design of the album and the cost of physically producing it.

Who are we?

We are Icelandic violinists Elfa Rún Kristinsdóttir, Laufey Jensdóttir and Guðbjörg Hlín Guðmundsdóttir, founding members and directors of Barokkbandið Brák.

Elfa Rún is based in Berlin Germany and works regularly with early music ensembles like Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin and performance groups like Nico and the Navigators. Her previous recordings have been nominated for several prizes, including Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik, and her Telemann CD received the Icelandic Music Prize for Classical Album of the year in 2015.
