Further Information

ADEST FESTUM

Cauda Collective is making their debut album ADEST FESTUM, featuring a new composition in 21 movements by Cauda Collective's members, based on one of Iceland's oldest musical manuscripts, the Office of St. Þorlákur.

The piece was composed in Skálholt in the summer of 2020 and premiered at Skálholt Summer Concert Series. Below you can listen to a live performance recording from the concert.

After staying in Skálholt, Cauda Collective continued developing the music and a recording was made at Harpa Concert Hall in Reykjavík in July 2020. The album Adest Festum will be released on Þorláksmessa (the mass of saint Thorlak, the patron saint of Iceland) and the release concert will be the same day, the 23rd of December 2020.
Note: If you buy ticket to the release concert but are not located in Iceland, you will be able to access a live stream as well as a recording from the concert.

ADEST FESTUM is written for Violin, Viola, Cello, Baritone Violin and electronics, which include recordings from the nature surrounding Skálholt.

The Office of St. Thorlak - Þorklákstíðir

Saint Thorlakur Thorhallsson was a bishop in Skálholt in 1178-1193. Bjarni Þorsteinsson wrote in his collection of ancient Icelandic music: “These songs are remarkable not only because of their old age, but also because they are written in Iceland, in the style of Icelandic poetry, by Icelandic men, about an Icelander.”

Bjarni was not quite right, because the music relates to the Gregorian chant, named after Pope Gregory I (540-604). The Gregorian chant developed mainly in western and central Europe during the 9th and 10th centuries, so one can assume that Saint Thorlakur got to know it through his studies in France.

Cauda Collective - chamber ensemble

Cauda Collective is a group of creative music performers seeking exploratory ways to mediate music to the audience, for example by working with a theme and using elements from theatre to make the music more approachable for the public. In Cauda Collective, the role of the classical music performer is challenged, e.g. with arranging and composing new music and to work with other artists and art mediums.

Many musicians and artists collaborate with Cauda Collective, but this time musicians, composers and arrangers are: Sigrún Hardardóttir violinist, Thora Margret Sveinsdottir violist and Thordis Gerdur Jónsdottir cellist.
Recording, mixing and mastering: Hafthor Karlsson
Album cover art: Eva Bjorg Hardardóttir
Special thanks: Skálholt Summer Concert Series
