Laymen Without Borders want to work towards Spark's vision of better treatment of displaced people around the world, and against the causes of displacement, including imperialism, capitalism and hostility towards minorities.
We aim for various projects to promote a deeper understanding of the roots of the refugee problems and its links to other problems such as environmental damage, neo-colonialism and class distinctions.
The goal of this fundraising is to start a project fund, dedicated to Haukur/Spark to support the movement's projects. The minimum we hope to raise this time is 2000 euros.
Our first project is a public conference that will be held in Reykjavik on Saturday 8th June 12:00-17:00. The program consists of short talks that shed light on Haukur's political ideals and his development as an activist, especially with respect to refugees. ENTRANCE IS FREE and everyone is welcome while there is still room. Some of the talks will be in Icelandic, but we will provide interpreters or transcripts. You can register by email to haukur.spark@gmail.com. Those who support our fund will be invited personally.
Talks planned are the following:

• Vésteinn Valgarðsson on oppressed nations' fight for freedom
• Snorri Páll Jónsson on the anarchists' role in the Kitchenware revolution
• Benjamin Julian on refugees
• A.T. on the international squat movement
• Jamie McQuilkin on The Industrial Workers of the World (IWW)
• Eva Hauksdottir on Haukur´s reasons for joining armed resistance.

The talks will be given in the above order. Participants can attend all of the talks or just some of them.
We want to express our gratitude for any contribution. Those who donate 55 € will be given a lino print of the magical "rune of the hawk" (haukrún). The picture is the result of a collaboration between the artist Una Stígsdóttir and Eva the Witch, Haukur's mother.
The rune is dedicated to Haukur. It symbolizes initiative, courage, independence, open mind and creativity. Haukur nurtured these characteristics, that are also attributed to the hawk. (Haukur means hawk in Icelandic). Herd mentality and self-pity will not thrive in a place where the rune is visible and the people willing to work on their character.
The lino is 39,5 x 52.5 cm and printed on 350 gr Hahnemühle paper. Forty copies are available.
Laymen Without Borders have launched a website, dedicated to Haukur/Spark and his visions. It will be a platform for Haukur's writings and other stuff related to him. In addition, the website will be used to publish articles and other material on causes of his interest.
Miriam Rose is a British activist working on the mining and metals industry. She has worked to raise awareness of the links between heavy industry, environmental issues and infringements of human rights in various parts of the world. She is a core member of Foil Vedanta, an international solidarity organisation targeting the multinational mining company Vedanta Resources and has spent time in Africa and India working with communities affected by the company’s operations.
Miriam lived in Iceland for several years. She met Haukur at Kárahjúkar in 2006, where they were working with Saving Iceland, demonstrating against large scale hydropower plants and the aluminium industry. Miriam was arrested in Iceland and threatened with deportation on the grounds that she was a threat to the fundamental values of society.

Vésteinn’s friendship with Haukur started on an internet forum. They turned out to share political opinions in various fields, in addition to their interest in history, philosophy and poetry. Together they founded The Icelandic Troll Friends' Society and The Cannibalist Association of Iceland and participated in pacifist anti-war demonstrations.
Vésteinn has been an active member of the Iceland-Palestine Society since forever and he had regular contacts with Haukur when Haukur was a volunteer on the West Bank in 2007. Vésteinn is thus very familiar with Haukur's vision on the rights of oppressed nations, and other groups, to freedom and independence.
Snorri Páll is an anarchist, who besides creating art has resisted state power, military power and capitalism most of his life. His writings on political and social matters, arts and culture have been published e.g. in Stundin, Reykjavík Grapevine and Tímarit Máls og Menningar.
Snorri is one of Haukur's oldest and dearest friends. They stood side by side in the environmentalist movement Saving Iceland, the rebellion following the economic crisis in 2008, in the struggle for refugee rights, the resistance against systematic violence on behalf of capitalism and the authorities. Together, as well as with other friends, they performed many demonstrations of various kinds, as well as social projects such as house squatting, publishing radical writings, both online and on paper, and a weekly street kitchen that provided crazy nice meals, free of charge.
Benjamín Julian is an activist and a columnist who takes a great interest in refugees. His friendship with Haukur started at a seminar on refugee issues in 2009. Since then he has supported a number of individual asylum seekers and raised awareness on displacement in general. He has visited and worked in refugee camps in Iceland and abroad, and obtained first-hand knowledge of the circumstances of people who are placed in such camps, sometimes against their will.
Benjamin runs the website pistillinn.is where he writes about various social matters, especially institutional power and the situation of refugees all over the world.
Benjamín took this photograph on 21st March 2016, the day after Greece started imprisoning all refugees at their arrival to the Greek Islands. It shows volunteers distributing toothbrushes, shampoo and biscuits through the fence. The imprisonment is a key element in "solving" the refugee problem, by keeping people at the borders.
Jamie is a political activist from Glasgow. He has been in Iceland for 5 years now. Jamie got to know Haukur during the founding of the IWW in Iceland. Since a high rate of industrial workers in Iceland are migrant workers and refugees, the movement faced great difficulties and did not reach a momentum. However, Haukur and Jamie shared an interest in more political matters than workers’ rights and soon became friends. They have inter alia worked together for No Borders.
Eva is Haukur's mother. She has supported his political activism since he was a teenager and participated in some of his demonstrations.
In her talk, Eva will give an overview of Haukur‘s political development from early childhood and explain the ideology and experience behind her son’s decision to join the Kurdish resistance.

Sunday 9th June, 14:45-16:00 A Guided City Centre Walk
The walk is not a part of the conference, but a gathering of Haukur's friends and family. Everyone is welcome to join us. We will walk from Hlemmur to Austurvöllur and visit some of the places related to Haukur personally and activism in Reykjavik. Our guide on the tour is Lárus Páll Birgisson, aka Lalli the Paramedic. The walk starts at the Police Station at Hlemmur at 15:45.
Lalli the Paramedic is a pacifist and one of the best known anti-war advocates in Iceland. He became acquainted with Haukur on an internet forum on religion but the first time they met in person was at Kárahnjúkar. Although they did not agree on religious matters they had a lot in common. Most significantly they detested imperialism and warmongers. They also shared a love for Icelandic nature and went hiking together.
Lalli has twice been prosecuted for peaceful demonstrations against the military policy of the USA and NATO.

Sunday 9 June, 16:00-17:00 Public gathering of Laymen Without Borders in Austurvöllur. The most significant points from the conference will be reported and some thoughts on their relevance to the refugees' predicament shared.
