Reykjavík Cabaret and Swift Signers have joined forces to put on a cabaret show with sign-language interpretation that brings together comedy, cabaret, burlesque, circus and various other performance styles. The show will be October 26 in the National Theater Cellar at 10 pm. In return for supporting this project you’ll receive a ticket to the Reykjavík Cabaret that can be used on the following dates:
October 19
October 26 - Interpreteted in Sign Language
November 2
November 9
The Reykjavík Cabaret has offered regularly scheduled performances since October 2016. The show has won over audiences for its variety, glamor and uproarious humor. This will be the second time the show has been performed with sign-language interpretation (the last time we had a chance was in April 2017), and it’s is going to be an especially entertaining and powerful show.
The reason we’re looking to crowdfunding for this project is that there are unfortunately very limited funds to support sign interpretation and zero public funding earmarked for interpretation in the arts. As a result, sign interpretation for events like this are entirely dependent on grants that event organizers must consistently apply for. That’s why we need your help to make this remarkable project a reality.
The members of Swift Signers (Hraðar hendur in Icelandic), Ástbjörg Rut Jónsdóttir, Lilja Kristín Magnúsdóttir, Margrét Auður Jóhannesdóttir and Sigrún Edda Theodórsdóttir, are four sign language interpreters who specialize in sign language performance/interpretation for theater and other art and performance events. All four of the Swift Signers have a degree in sign language interpretation. Ástbjörg also holds a BA in theater performance from the Iceland University of the Arts and has mainly worked with theatrical direction and facilitation in recent years in addition to sign interpretation for performance events. The group has worked in interpreting artistic events for about 15 years, including several theater performances at the National Theater of Iceland, the Reykjavík City Theater as well as a few concerts and other musical events.
The Swift Signers are extremely ambitions and passionate about their work as they devote enormous effort into the collaboration among the sign interpreters, artists and event developers. As a group undertaking, this process ensures the artistic integrity of the event is preserved and that the sign performance enhances the experience of all audience members, both deaf and hearing.
