About me.
These past five months I, Sigríður Ingibjörg Stefánsdóttir, have been volunteering in the town Moshi in Tanzania. I am an Occupational Therapist, graduated from Háskólinn á Akureyri and have been working with the project Building a Caring Community (BCC) that runs a daycare for children with intellectual disability. Unfortunately, the children with disability often don’t get the same opportunities in their community as others, Tanzania is no exception. Families tend to think of it as a shame to their family and even believe that it is a punishment from God. That leads to children being abandoned or hidden from society, so it’s common that neither the child or their family get the support that they need. Building a Caring Community (BCC) was founded in order to counter this development by creating opportunities and offer the support they need. BCC gladly accepts volunteers that have the appropriate degree and knowledge to share with them, that way they can expand their services. My degree has served me well in my work and I’ve been able to do good, I am grateful for the opportunity to work with BCC and hope that I can get back to them as soon as possible.

The project in Moshi.
The last three months I’ve been watching, diagnosing and creating profiles about the children for the staff of BCC to personalize their services. This is a big project, BCC manages 11 daycares with about 200 children, I have been working with two homes and met 15 children. The dream is to get back to them. I want to meet them all, get to know them and personalize their care by working with the mand the staff that is eager to learn so they can provide a better care. I also want to be able to follow up on their therapy which is a very important part of a personalized care. The story of each child has touched me deeply. The fact that a child is isolated for years, neglected both physically and mentally, only for being born with a disability is a violation of their human rights. That is why I sincerely ask for your support so I can be a part of the BCC project for at least six more months. During that time I will write about my journey and my experiences and publish it in a 2018 calendar together with pictures from my stay. All profit of the calendar will go to GAIA Equality for all up coming projects.

The expenses of such a trip is 7000 euros, that includes housing, electricity and water, two business visas and food. Everything beyond that I would use to help the children. Social Security Number and Bank account belongs to the non-profit organization Gaia Equality for all. Um mig.
Síðustu fimm mánuði hef ég, Sigríður Ingibjörg, verið sjálfboðaliði í bænum Moshi í Tanzaníu. Ég er menntaður iðjuþjálfi frá Háskólanum á Akureyri og hef verið að vinna sem slík með samtökunum Building a Caring Community (BCC) sem reka dagheimili fyrir börn með færniskerðingar. Því miður er það oft þannig að einstaklingar með færniskerðingu fá ekki sömu tækifæri í samfélaginu og aðrir, það er engin undantekning á því í Tanzaníu. Þar hafa fjölskyldur í gegnum tíðina litið á það sem skömm að eignast fötluð börn og jafnvel trúa því að um refsingu Guðs sé að ræða. Börnin eru því oft á tíðum yfirgefin eða falin frá samfélaginu. Það er því algengt að þau og fjölskyldur þeirra hafi ekki fengið viðeigandi þjónustu og stuðning. Til að sporna gegn þessari þróun var Building a Caring Community (BCC) stofnað með það að leiðarljósi að skapa tækifæri og bjóða upp á þá þjónustu sem þau þurfa. BCC tekur vel á móti sjálfboðaliðum sem hafa viðeigandi menntun og þekkingu til að deila með þeim, þannig geta þau þróað þjónustu sína. Sú menntun sem ég hef hefur nýst mér vel í starfi og hef ég látið margt gott að mér leiða, ég er þakklát fyrir að hafa fengið tækifæri til að starfa með BCC og vona ég að ég komist sem fyrst til þeirra aftur.

Starfið í Moshi.
Síðustu þrjá mánuðina hef ég unnið að því að horfa, greina og búa til þjónustuáætlanir með börnum og starfsólki BCC til að gera þjónustuna einstaklingsmiðaðri. Verkefnið er stórt og í umsjá BCC eru 11 dagheimili og um 200 börn, ég hef unnið á tveim heimilum og kynnst 15 börnum. Draumurinn er að komast aftur út. Mig langar að hitta þau öll, kynnast þeim og vinna að markvissari þjónustu með þeim og starfsfólkinu sem þyrstir í að læra svo þau geti veitt betri þjónustu. Einnig langar mig að geta sinnt eftirfylgni sem er mikilvægur þáttur í einstaklingsmiðaðri þjónustu. Saga hvers barns er einstök og snerti mig djúpt. Það að barn sé lokað inni svo árum skiptir er vannrækt á sál og líkama eingöngu vegna þess að það fæðist með fötlun er brot á mannréttum þess. Því er það mín einlæg ósk að þú styrkir mig til að ég geti verið hluti af starfsmanna teymi BCC næstu sex mánuði í það minnsta.

Kosnaður við slíka ferð er áætlaður um 7000 evrur, inn í því væri húsnæðisleiga ásamt rafmagni og vatni, tvö bisness visa og fæði. Ég mun nota alla umframpeninga í þágu barnanna.
