Our Story

Salarctica was founded in 2014 as the serendipitous result of a chance encounter between an enthusiastic herbalist, soap maker and ethnologist Særún Lísa Birgisdóttir and naturalistic entrepreneur, business development specialist and biomedical scientist Steingrímur Óli Einarsson. Together they have developed a truly unique natural product line that is based on sustainable production methods. Salarctica's 100% pure, wild and natural salt, herbs and berry products are the result of an organic approach that seeks to honor the Icelandic wilderness and its purity. From the smallest herbs handpicked in the highlands to the crispy flakes of salt from the magnificent Westfjords. Salactica's products capture the essence of a truly traditional Icelandic heritage.

Our Logo and Philosophie

Our products originate in the Icelandic wilderness, handpicked from the landscape of folk tales, fairy worlds and the Viking sagas. Iceland has a strong oral tradition that is both fantastical and practical as natural medicine has been handed down from generation to generation along with folk tales, legends and sagas.

The Hrosshvalr, a creature of ancient Icelandic lore, has thus fittingly been chosen as the symbol of our brand. The inspiration for this beautiful version of the classical hippocamp, a fierce folkloric fusion of horse and whale, is depicted in the late 15th century drawings on Abraham Ortelius' map of Iceland. A creature of both sea and land, the Hrosshvalr combines the elements of our product line and represents its strong ties to both country and tradition.
