Further Information

For 30 years it has been my main interest to explore the outdoors of Iceland. It‘s not only about reaching the destination, I need to know the stories connected to the area I’m traveling through. I was greatly inspired by my grandmother Hulda Þórisdóttir. She used to take me on long hikes along the beaches and the hillsides and she had countless stories to tell where nature was put in context including mystical stories about elves and hidden people that only gifted people can see.

Trouble and Wandering
About four years ago I started the hiking-group "Vesen og vergangur" (eng: Trouble and Wandering) using Facebook as the main message portal for announcing hiking trips. The purpose of the group was to create a platform for people interested in hiking to improve security and companionship. In addition I have also been interested in all national routes and to go from point A to point B. With the group it was made easier and cheaper to rent a bus for transportation. The group grew and now there are over 7000 members in the group.

Two books and now the Wapp
By increasing frequency of trips with special emphasis on stories I told along the way, made me want to put all this information into writing. Two books have been published in Icelandic and both of them contain information about trails and history-related knowledge, in combination with information on place names and nature. In the context of this writing I began more and more to consider whether there was another way to communicate this information and concluded that it was time to develop and make the Wapp on smart phones to share digital route descriptions both in Icelandic and English.

Release date
Now the time has come for the release date of the Wapp and opening day has been scheduled on 5th of November. Route descriptions will of both urban and rural areas and a majority of them sold at a fair price, but free sponsored trails will also be offered. Initially the emphasis will be on shorter routes but with time the trails will be extended. It takes time to collect route description in the database and it will be done in cooperation with independent authors, local authorities, organizations and companies.

Karolina Fund
With a grant from Karolina Fund we will be able to finance a collection of trails through less populated villages around Iceland. Route guidance will be in Icelandic and English and will be offered free of charge to users, at least until year 2020. The following places have been selected (subject to cooperation with the local population for information and photos):
Stokkseyri, Laugarvatn, Reykholt, Hvolsvöllur, Djúpivogur, Breiðdalsvík, Seyðisfjörður, Borgarfjörðureystri, Bakkafjörður, Raufarhöfn, Grenivík, Hrísey, Hofsós, Drangsnes, Norðurfjörður, Súðavík, Bíldudalur, Flatey, Breiðafirði, Rif, Búðardalur, Reykholt, Vogar á Vatnsleysuströnd, Garður, Sandgerði and Hafnir.
