Further Information

In the booklet text Runólfur Þórðarson i. a. writes:

Over four decades Árni Kristjánsson played in many memorable concerts for the Reykjavík Music Society. His repertoire was vast, around seventy chamber music works of different sizes, not to mention solo works and songs. It was most fortunate for the Music Society to have access to a pianist like Árni, with his skills and talent. He learned new works quickly and was the only pianist in Reykjavík capable of accompanying anyone who came to visit. At the end of the Second World War there were only a few educated and trained pianists in Reykjavík. Later this changed and other pianists came back home from their studies abroad and became active performers. This took some pressure of Árni, who was then getting older.

Foreign musicians, who Árni "assisted", came here on behalf of the Reykjavík Music Society. Apart from those heard on these CDs we can name a few: Adolf Busch (1945), Ruth Hermanns (1948), the Check's Frantisek Smetana (1962) and Karel Snebergr (1962), Karine Georgyan (1970) and Pina Carmirelli (1971, 1973 og 1977).

Up to the seventies it was common to look upon the role of the pianist as a "assistant" to the soloist. The word "assists" was used in printed material related to the concert; in programs, advertisements and even in newspapers. Surely it must be debatable if this describes the role of the pianist in the case of Árni Kristjánsson.

The soloists Árni "assists" on the CDs are:

Björn Ólafsson, violin
Egill Jónsson, clarinett
Endre Granat, violin
Erling Blöndal Bengtsson, cello
Fredell Lack, violin
Gisela Depkat, cello

Recorded by the Iceland National Radio 1949 til 1971.

Among the pieces are the Brahms A major Violinsonata , Sonatas for Cello by Beethoven in E flat major and Chopin in g minor. Also Beethoven C major and Boccerini A-dúr Violinsonatas and the Sonata for clarinett in E flat major by Brahms and smaller works.
